power gain mods??

i have a 92 rs with a 305 tbi engine, its all stock, i plan on headers and a (open element) aka after market air filter, it does have performance plugs\wires on it already. it pulls pretty hard from off the line start but ounce i get up and going into like end of 2nd begining for 3rd gear i have almost no power, so it pulls preat bad. anyone have anygood ideas for me, what to get etc...

Check the TBI boards, alot of TPI guys don't realize TBI is a different animal. Exhaust doesn't offer as big of gains for TBI than a TPI car.

I can't see how that can be true. TPI engines already have a relatively beefy exhaust from the factory, but if I am not mistaken the TBI engines came with a choking 2 1/4" exhaust system (same as the LG4).

1 5/8" primary headers, 3" catalytic convertor and a 3" catback would do wonders for your setup. After that, you need to learn how to tune the car via PROM editing if you intend on making even more power.

All engines work the same, just not all were created equal.

A great first mod would be the open air element (very easy to do yourself) and picking up a nice cat-back exhaust off of summitracing.com and having a muffler shop weld it on.

The open element runs about $30 from your local autozone or other parts store.

Cat-backs run about 250-300 dollars and usually run about 50-100 to install.

You should see an honest 8-10 RWHP gain with those two mods. That doesn't seem like alot, but your motor wasn't really built for performance, and it's only a 5 liter engine. But most of the fun in modding is learning what makes your car tick!

I read a few threads on the exhaust forum (of course I can't find them) that said modding exhaust may cause the engine to throw codes. I understand less restriction is better, I was just repeating what I saw.

well i know engines lol, i built my 305 in my 79 camaro and im building a 454 for it now, i forgot to mention i allready have flowmaster mufflers on it. and i already have a new air filter, just havent had time. but i dont wana spend too much money or work on this car, i just cant think of anything else i can do that wouldent be too much work that would make it pull harder when u get up in the gears

ps i was thinking maybe performance intake and maybe a new cam. not sure

Gears and a stall too, if you're looking to get that far into it.
