n00b needs help with cam selection
ive been reading for days and feel like my eyes are going to bleed. i used the search and went way back to 2001, but i couldnt fins someone asking the same question with the same setup. and i have mainly delt with rotary cars that dont have as many moving parts that i have to worry about. i also posted in the TPI section but only got 1 response so i thought id post here.
i recently aquired my dads 85 IROC (305 tpi). one of the first things i wanted to fix was the smoking on start up and while i was at it i decided to have the heads ported and polished at the same time, and since the engine was torn down that much i decided that i was to get a cam aswell. the car has a 3.23 posi rearend, k&n filters, 95 shot of nitrous, ported & polished heads (once they return) and a hypertech chip that everyone here says is crap. besides that and suspension its pretty much stock.
i was wondering if i HAD to go with a computer controlled cam or if i could pick anyone without freaking the computer out. what does it mean if the cam is computer controlled? i want a cam that i dont have to burn a prom for at this time, but i also want one that will go the best with future mods. the only 2 cams that are listed on summits site that are computer controlled are:
The one summit suggested
The one they said wouldnt work
which one would be the best? summit said that the second one wouldnt work without burning a new prom, but didnt know what would happen if i installed it without doing so or what i needed to change in the prom. also neither include the lifters, are there any cams within the same price range that include lifters that would work?
sorry for the long post and thanks to any info you can give!

my plans for the car are to slowly modify it when i have the time and money. its not my daily driver but im not looking for a pure race or drag car. i would like to eventually see anywhere from high 12s to high 13s EVENTUALLY. i know im not going to be able to do that right now.

we can hook up you up with high 13's with a cam, high twelves are gonna be a pain with that 305.
The 081's assuming thats what you have need to be ported and the intake valves should be brought up to 1.94. It seems like that is what you are doing. Then go get your cam and have a prom burnt. The tpi is a pain because it kills horsepower, its a great showoff tool. Im a little tipsy so bare with me. If your really want to get a nice big cam for that 305 try something with around a 220+ duration @ 50 , and slightly larger exhaust and let lift sit in the .5 area. Try to keep it a sysmetrical as well.
The blue smoke on start up happens with every single chevy smallblock you need new valve seals, the stock ones tend to leak. Don't worry its normal for a chevy and not that important.
Your flat hydraulic which is good, myself I am building up an old!!! 305 4bbl, look into lunati cams specifically the voodoo line up makes life easy very few to choose from. myself i am going for the 262 cam, you may want to look at the 268, i dont know if the computer can control this and it is a real nice cam for a 305.
The guys might agree they might call me an idiot here are the specs and you need to get in touch with the diy prom people here this should put you into the 13's. A torque converter and undedrive pulleys could also help.
:
Keep in mind this is an extrememly aggressive cam and you will have fun you also need roller rockers and the springs they suggest.
Advertised Duration IN/EX: 268/276
Duration @ .050 IN/EX: 227/233
Gross Valve Lift IN/EX: .489"/.504"
LSA / ICL: 110/106
Valve Lash IN/EX: Hyd/Hyd
RPM Range: 1800-6200
Look into it and ask around. Call Lunati.
The cam/lifter set is $189 from Jegs and summit

thanks for the response!
well im looking for a cam that wont freak the computer out now. i do plan on getting into PROM burning, but right now that isnt in my budget. im also in somewhat of a hurry. im trying to get everything back together and running by say... umm... the 21st. the heads will be done on thursday and it only takes a day for me to get parts from summit. it should only take a max of 2 days for my cousin and i to get everything back together and running. then after a few days of making sure everything is ok i plan to take the car on a drive from Ohio to florida.
i am looking for a cam that has the most potential while not making the computer flake out.
