maybe the key is old and has been damaged? though it's probably something wrong with on the column...hopefully someone here has had the same problem. You may wanna try a spare key.

The same thing happed to my Brothers 71 El Camino. That horrible high pitch noise is most likly the starter sticking. Now if its the starter or the ignition I dont know. The Camino you can start then pull the key out while its still running, so I would check the ignition, these things go out. Rip into the ignition see what you can find. Whats broken or what needs a little lube. It its better then frying you starter.

I would venture to say if it has something to do with the lock itself. It might be that there is something wrong internally going on inside the plug. Probably there is something wrong with the springs that push down on the wafers that are coming in contact with the key inside of the ignition. These are side bar wafer locks and are mostly common in all vehicles. If you can pull the key out when the ignition is already ingaged ,then the springs in the plug are weak and shot. They can be replaced but it's kinda complexed to do. The only way i know how to do it is because i work as a lockmith, although i don't have a ton of experience with automotive locks yet. In your case try getting some graphite powder or lock deicer at like the home depot or a hardware store and shooting it into the cylinder.
