350 Completed!!! One last thing...

Finally, after enough talk, the 350 is pretty much done! It just has to be balanced, and in it goes... So here we go:

350 4-bolt, .030" over.
Hypereutectic(sp?) flattops,
882 Smog heads, milled slightly, block decked,
9:1 compression, in or around depending on the gasket I use.
Comp.Cams XE262 grind, flattappet.
(218/224, .460"/.470")
Edelbrock Performer, NON EGR.
Stock Qjet, tweaked over.
Mated behind a NON-WC(!) T-5 tranny, and 3.73 OPEN(!) rear-end.
There is no computer on this vehicle(canadian-made), and no need for any emission equipment to physically be there, although it does have to pass a sniffer.

Here is the weak link:
Edelbrock TES Headers,(LG4 version), dinky cat (new) to match.

3" catback following some weird welding right after the cat. (previous owner!!)

My goal is around 315 horse, which is the absolute limit of stock 882 heads, but of course that is with a free(ER) flowing exahust. Car will be daily driven, so I did not want to get outta hand with drivability.
Also, high octane fuel is not worth the extra cost up here in Canada, as gas prices are ludicrous, so I went with the 76cc heads over 64cc camel heads to keep compression down. Oh, that and the 882's were $50. =)

Additional notes: I have a few more bucks to throw into either a holley/PerformerRPM induction combo, or to upgrade the kink in the exhaust. Opinions anyone?

Also, the money I got for selling off the World305 heads bought ALOT of the parts I needed for the 350. Moral of the story: When (if, and why?) modding your 305, don't bother getting 305-specific heads.

All and any comments/opinions welcome, I am truly psyched!

Later,
Hype.

Fix your exhaust.

As for your 305 head comment, if you don't get 305-specific heads, you'll need domed pistons to make up the compression loss. Seen many of those lately? You can, however, use 305 heads on a dished-piston 350 - not very hard to find. The World heads probably flow as well as your 882's, and with a few hours of quality time with a die grinder, would probably out perform them. They already have screw-in rocker studs to boot.

Oh, fix your exhaust.

If you want your car to pass emmisions and have good driveability why in hell would you want to swap to a holley. The extra 5-15hp you make will be far outmatched by the gas mileage loss, emmisions problems, etc. If you want to put money into it, your first priortity is getting that tiny Y/cat off there (even better, just get new headers too, TES are as bad as you can get), and next stop is heads. You freely recognize that your heads are gonna bottleneck you to just over 300hp, but then you still want to drop coin on a new intake/carb? As spock would say 'highly illogical'

Yeah, after consulting with a buddy of mine who swappped to a holley, then flunked the sniffer a half dozen times...
The Qjet stays on, as does the Performer intake.
Now I know the 882 heads are only good to 300+change before they hit a brick wall, but in all reality, what do I really need out of this car? I think that aftermarket heads are an investment I might never be willing to take up. Anyhow, it's probably enough to satisfy me. Well, until next Summer...

As for the exhaust. Hoo-boy. Why I bought those I'll never know, live and learn. I was so psyched when I could whip that little 305 all the way into burying the tach. Ahhh the 305 will be good enough, I said to myself. Wrong-o.

Anyhow, what headers should I be investing in? I think I'll peruse the exhaust board...

Later,
Hype.
