if you have about 300 or so I'd go cat back, do some research to find out what brands sound like.

Before you get a cat-back, I would go with headers, that will really help your engine breath along with the KN.

GM GOODWRENCH 350
EDELBROCK TES HEADERS

KN AIRFILTER
ACCEL HEI DISTRIBUTOR

Combine both posts and get a full exhaust doing a cat back will gain more by it's self then headers. So if I was on a budget I would:
a) get cat-back
b) headers
c) Heads and or cam (kinda go hand in hand depending on how radical you go.)
If money is no issue get a full exhaust headers all the way back and then go for engine stuff (head cam rocker porting intake)
just my .02
------------------
1989 Trans Am GTA, L98 5.7L TPI, TH700-R4, T-Tops, dual cats, 9-bolt rear, 3.27,
- Dynomax muffler
- K&N Air Filter
1992 Camaro RS, LO3 5.0L TBI, T-5, T-Tops, 3.08, L69 Dual Snorkel - Sold
- K&N Air Filter
Honda engines ROCK, I have one on my lawn mower but I still have to push it.

Ok first off, don't listen to these tree hugging yuppies. Screw the cats ok. NO CATS, I don't have them on my car cuase I could give a rats *** about global warming, it hasn't been proven so it ain't real!! And there is no sniffer checks in VA.
Just get some headers and str8 pipes all the way back to a flowmaster 40 series with dual outlets, here:
Hooker Shorty 1-3/4" stainless headers $141.95
Flowmaster 40 series muffler
3 in. single inlet, dual 2 1/2 in. outlets $ 59.95
Don't forget that y-pipe!
Thats your best bet. I'd also suggest an Edelbrock Performer Vortec intake, about $209.95, an HyperTech 160 degree thermostat.

Removing or gutting your cats will get you a fine of up to $10,000, and possibly jail time too, if you get caught.
You also dont want to put 1 3/4" headers on a stock 305 TBI.
If you have the stock cat on there still, get yourself a 3" aftermarket cat, and a 3" cat back exhaust (get the ones for TPI cars, they're better). Have your muffler shop make up an adapter for now to connect your y-pipe to the 3" cat. Then do headers later, with the 3" outlet y-pipe, that will connect to your 3" cat.

Yep the best power making mod is to remove the catolitic converter! In reality thier is no proof the automobiles have contributed to global warming, scientits speculate that the earth is now entering one of its every 100,000 year warming cycles.Other than exhuast work look into a good cam.
