Dead Deashlights
Dead Deashlights
Hello all. I'm hoping for a little help here. When I left for work this morning and put my lights on, I noticed that my dash lights were all out. I changed the fuse and it popped immediately. Any idea on what could be shorting out all of a sudden ?

Your cigarette lighter and tail-lights are on the same circut. A shorted out lighter and/or tail-light bulb can cause this problem.

The power that lights the lights comes from the tail light circuit of the headlight switch (that's why any time the tail lights are on, the dash lights are too); if it's a Camaro, it goes to the dimmer pot; in wither car, it goes to the fusebox; if it's a Firebird, it goes to the dimmer module and then to the lights, if it's a Camaro, it goes straight to the lights.
The cigarette lighter cannot cause the dash light fuse to blow, nor can the tail lights. Ignore that suggestion. They are on 2 separate circuits: the cigarette lighter is on the same circuit with the dome light, and the tail lights have their own circuit, with their fuse after the switch downstream of where the dash lights get their power.
I'm going to assume that you're working on a Firebird, because it's all but impossible for this to happen in a Camaro unless somebody has sodomized the wiring which would most likely occur around the radio. If somebody did a typical ghetto install by hacking the wires and left the instr lamp wire that goes to the radio hanging someplace bare, it could be touching something. Otherwise, if it's a Firebird, you probably need a dimmer module.
