broke crank..what to do
Hello all,
I have a 1989 Firebird with a 305, its supercharged, with Accel Super Ram and Gen Vii, I live in Calif, the car is NOT smog legal. All the upper motor was rebuilt and is performance, the heads, intake, roller rockers, etc,,the upper half is great shape,.. no worries there
The crank broke at the timing gear, Anyways, I need to pull the motor.
Here is what I have been thinking
1, Buy a good crank and keep the 305 block (not smog legal)
2. Buy a 350 Short block (not smog legal)
3. LS1 motor, (smog legal)
The only thing that prevents the smog legal is the Gen Vii Computer does not control the EGR, which I can have open all the time when getting smog, also the check engine light wont work, but I can make a circuit board, to appear its working, the emissions out of the tail pipe are within the legal limits.
Any ideas on what I could do, I dont want to get rid of the car, its in great shape, interior just re-done, suspension is great...
Or is there a way to keep all the intake and stuff and get a new computer with wiring harness that is smog legal..
Any ideas or comments are greatly appreciated.

umm... Buy a new crank maybe...
If you got the work on the 305 done to a point where you are happy just get another one. If you want to change and spend money on everything again... do something different

Car: VIN=85 T/A, CAR=82/3 T/A gfx, go figure. She's a T/A anyway!
Engine: 5.0, Holley 600 cfm 4-barrel
Transmission: THM350 ??
So do you want the car to be smog legal or not? Being from the UK I don't know if CA allow competition cars which aren't smog legal, if that's what your car is. If you want it to be legal on the street then you're going to have to change stuff.
If not then go for a 350 short block and keep all the intake gear. If you were just getting a crank, then you'd probably be checking if the rest of the engine sustained any damage, right?
Mark.

I made a decision to install a 350 block. Because of the 58 cc chamber heads I have, I need to have custom short block made, can somebody receommend me a custom shop that will make this motor for me..
