Hello,

You shouldn't just plug the holes in the manifolds to eliminate the heater core. The right rear head coolant exit should be connected to the radiator hose nipple to maintain coolant flow from the head, or you could create a hot spot in the head, resulting in detonation and/or cylinder damage. At the least, you should pipe/hose it back to the plugged port on the water pump.

Its very normal for your headers to smoke after you do something to/near them. It just burning off the oil from your hands. If it is a lot of smoke, see if it smells sweet and check for a coolant leak on the header. The heater valve could leak.
