Gas tank compatability: 86 IROC -> 92 RS

Will a baffled gas tank from an 86 IROC fit in my 92 RS? I'm tired of my car dying when I have to make a hard stop with under 1/4 tank of gas. Plus, the rear will be off soon, anyway, so I might as well put one on there. Also, where can I buy new foam for the tank straps, or is it something I can buy at a hardware store? Thanks guys.

It should fit, but if the gas tank you are swapping in is not a 1LE tank, it should be the same as the one in your RS now.

The guy said it has the baffles in it. Was the 1LE package not offered in 86?

Your 92 gas tank already has the baffles in it. The first 1LE's were in 88 but they went into regular production in 89. All thirdgen gastanks you get from the dealer now are baffled, and they fit all 82-92 thirdgens.

There is a differnet tank, not sure if I want to get a GM price on it It started in 1989, here is an excerpt from the technical articles for a 1989 IROC w/1LE: "Special swinging fuel pickup in gas tank and special 18 gallon baffled fuel tank for fuel pickup down to .5 gallon reserve to prevent fuel starvation in hard cornering"

I want that gas tank, cause I know for sure mine doesnt hold 18 gal, and I also know for sure that my gas tank does not "perform" well under hard cornering.

Yeah, I am pretty sure that all third gen gas tankes are 15.5 gal. I remember reading that from numerous posts made.

There is no 18 gallon tank with a swinging fuel pickup. Its a myth/rumor. Several 1LE owners have measured their gas tanks and they're all 15.5-16 gallons, same as the rest of us.

But the 1LE cars still got different gas tanks, right? Both my car and my sisters have problems with the gas running away from the pickup when we are under a 1/4 tank. I really dont car about the size, as long as the baffles work.

Like I said, as far as I know, the 1LE tanks are the exact same as the other 89-92 gas tanks. They both have baffles. But I've never seen this "swinging fuel pump pickup".
