Motor help please

I made a few posts asking for help ID'ing my motor.

Well I finally just took of the heads and measured the bores. They are 3.776 so that makes it a .040 305cu in right?

So now that I know it is a 305 and not a 267 like the casting numbers sites said it was I can get to work on the motor.

I want to put in new heads. So many folks have different opinions I don't know what to use.

The parts will not be swapped to a 350 down the road, it is a daily driver and won't be raced.

I don't want to port the heads unless I will realy see gains because I don't want to mess them up.

I have a performer carb and manifold and headers and good exhaust.

I just need a cam and heads.

What should I go with?

416's 187's 601's etc?

what do you all think?

I'd go with the world products S/R Torquer heads that are made for a 305. They flow more air than stock and will be useful for increasing your torque and hp. The hp jump varies, but you should get at least 30-40 extra ponies with a stock type cam.

Oops! I almost forgot the cam. If it's a daily driver that you just want to have a little more pep, Go with a towing or rv cam from comp cams. If you want it to be a bit more powerful, I'd say go as high as 212 degrees of intake duration maximum. The exhaust should stay around a maximum of 218 degrees of duration. Stay in that area and you won't be disappointed during your daily trips to the store.

Thanks for the info

I do like the S/R heads but unless I find a used set they are out of my price range. I was thinking of getting a set of rebuilt chevy heads I see them on the web and at auction sites for about 200 to 300 bucks. What chevy heads do you all recomend?

I have about a grand to spend. I need heads, distributor, spark box and if I can push it maybee a torque converter or different headers if my old ones wont fit the heads. I will be buying used or rebuilt for most of the parts

I never thought of the RV cam because its going in a car, but now that I think about it the power I will be using is in the low to mid range...just like a truck!

If you don't want to spend that much, find a set of 081 or 416 casting heads and rebuild them. As for a distributor, a stock GM HEI would work fine for a 305, if that's what you have, keep it, if it works, why spend money if you don't have to?

RV cam would be fine.
The money you save on a distributor, maybe get yourself a nice free flowing exhaust to match the headers.
An open element air filter as well.
Oh and if you have a carbed motor with a quadrajet(quadra-bog) replace that too.
