Without knowing everything about the engine, I didn't read the entire thread, I'd say it looks like what's left of a floating piston lock/snap ring.

Yep, looks like a spirolok (sic?) as you said in the thread. If not that maybe a pc. sheared off something in the timing area? Those bearings look baaad. Yeck. Good luck to ya!
