Hood won't shut

Allright, I've had the problem for a month now, but I'm going for inspection and I don't want any problems, and im sick of dealing with it. My hood will not stay shut at all, the little mechanism won't hold it down anymore. The hood shocks are shot since i got the car 3 years ago but i really dont care about them, a golf club has been working just fine. I ordered a new latch for it, and my question is, how hard will this be to install and is there anything I should know before I do it? I don't know how to do much mechanical stuff but im attempting to learn.....

Which part is broken? Mine wasn't shutting but I just replaced a spring and bent the hook so that it connected right.

This is the best way i can describe it, if u look at the hood there is that little metal bar that the mechanism latches on to. Well that mechanism no longer holds that bar down(if thats any help to you). Like if you were to hold the hood up and use a screwdriver in place of the metal bar to simulate the hood shutting, when you push down with the screwdriver the mechanism accepts it and snaps it in, but when you lift the screwdriver vertically it just lets it go....I dont know how well explained that is but basically it just won't hold the hood down. Thanks for any help!

Could just be a spring broken or something bent, but it could also just be worn out. Make sure the cable is returning by pushing the release lever back after you pull it to open the hood. Replacement should be fairly easy, but may require some adjustment to get it to shut correctly.

350 with stealth intake, holley carb, 470 lift cam. 700r4 with .5 boost valve, vette servo, tci lock-up kit, B&M megashifter. Richmond 3.73 gears, powertrax locker, timkin bearings, synthetic lube. Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, currant red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...
