2 quick questions about freeze plugs

will chrysler small block plugs fit SBC's? i have a kit here from "expand-tite". part # 02661.

1 5/8" brass expansion plugs - quantity 9

1 1/4 brass expansion plug - quantity 1

1 7/8" brass expansion plug - quantity 1

3/8" NPT pipe plugs - quantity 2

1/2" NPT pipe plug - quantity 1

also should the cam plug in the back be changed along with the freeze plugs? thanks.

The 1 5/8" plugs will fit the water jacket holes, but that's about it.

You'll also need some 1/2" (maybe 9/16" plugs for the front oil galleys, a 23/32" plug for the rear cam bearing, and a handful of 1/4" NPT plugs for the rest of the oil galleys.

If you're doing this on a bare block, drive it out with a broom handle through the cam bores. If it's on an assembled engine, I'd be inclined to leave it alone if it's not leaking.

its on an assembled block. gonna try and refreshen it without touching the bottom end. but i was thinkin about just leavin the cam plug alone. there are no stains around it showing any signs of leakage. but is silicone sealant ok to use around the plug before installing it? also when i was hammering one of the plugs in, instead of it being flush with the block like the old ones were, the new one sits about 1mm or so inside the edge of the block. will this be ok?

I would use something like Permatex HiTack or Indian Head Shellac on the freeze plugs. As for the one that is 1mm below the surface, that's OK. It is actually better for them to be a little below the surface. The edge of the plug will bite into the block and prevent it from popping out.

It makes no difference if it's slightly below the level of the block. The only ones to worry about are the oil galley plugs. If they're driven in too far they can block the oil passages, but you'd have to drive them pretty far for that to happen.

kool thanks. well i have all the old plugs out. i dont think anyone changed the coolant ever in this motor. there is a lot of sludge inside and im in the process of flushing it out with a water hose. i have most of it out. i did make an interesting find tho. the 2 plugs right behind each motor mount bracket werent even metal. they were rubber. sorta like a bigger version of the rubber plugs u put in the oil pans when the threads are stripped. does this mean they were changed before?

got all the plugs removed. im flushing the **** outta this engine. the rust colored water is still coming out of it. but anywayz 2 of the freeze plug holes have burrs inside them where the new plug is gonna go. then the rest are smooth inside. will these burrs cause leakage? i tried to clean it up as much as i could. and all plugs came out in once piece.

How bad are the burrs? If you use RTV on the outside of the plugs you'll probably be fine.

I think RTV will seal that.

Yeah, they were changed because the originals rusted out.

That burr isn't even in the sealing area. You should be fine.

no the sealing surface is uneven. i can feel it with my finger. i know its hard to tell from the pic. the 2 holes that feel like this are the ones that had the rubber plug in them. the rest are smooth.

Clean it up good to the metal without removing any metal, RTV like Ape suggested (I used hardening Permatex on mine), shouldn't be a problem.

Did you get brass or steel?

Brass is good.

Color shouldn't matter as long as it's rated for the temperature & fluid it will see.
