Rear Oil Seal Installation ?

I have to take out my tranny and figured that while I was down there, I should replace the rear oil seal. It is 120K miles old and last time I was down there noticed it had a very small leak.

Removal looks easy; carefully pry out old one.

Installation is were I have a question. My service manual says I need a special tool for installation. Is this true? Can I just carefully tap it in with a punch/block of wood like I do for most other seals?

Thanks

Dale

Is 86 one or two piece? If two piece, the hardest part will be getting the old one out. I had to loosen all the main caps to get the top part out. The bottom part is easy though.... Putting the new ones in is easy too.

Just grease the inner lip of the seal real good and leave the outer part dry.

Carefully roll the inner lip onto the crank surface making sure not to fold the lip over.

Install the rest of the way as a normal seal.
