Dumb Q: How far out the diptstick tube should the dipstick stick?
Got that? When I replaced the headers a while ago, my friend mangled the oil dipstick... so I thought I'd just go to Autozone and pick up a new one. I got a (chrome) dipstick for something like 68-82 700R4. Well, I don't think it is long enough, because I can't read how much oil I have in there (after changing it last weekend even).
Acording to my friends, the dipstick should stick out the other end of the tube... makes sense. Well, this one didn't until I just cut off about 1" of the tube. How far does the stock one stick through? I'd really like to not cut off more tube than I needed to...

it is supposto stick out the tube but you might wanna do it the right way and get the correct one or it will never be really accurate. 68-82 700R4, shouldnt you have gotten a 84-92 one?

Well, it was the only style they had at the time... which was a long time ago (few months). Not to mention that I have all ready taken 1" off my stock tube to try and make this work with the new dipstick. Too late to go back...

I would go to your nearest GM dealer and get a new tube and stick. They aren't that expensive, I had to replace mine when I swapped in the 700r4. The 700r4 I put was from an astro van--I didn't want to check it from the grill.

Well it shouldn't stick out at all if you put your stick into the tube all the way.

The outer part of the dipstick shoves into the rubber grommet on the transmission housing about 1.25" but that measurement is meaningless. What really matters is the distance from the top edge of the trans grommet (there is a "lip" on the dipstick where it won't push in any further that lines up with the top of the grommet) to the tip of the dipstick. You should be able to still get an accurate measurement of this from your old disptick as long as you can still shove the dipstick through it.
BTW-
How much dip could a dipstick stick if a dsipstick could stick dip?
