Idle fine to high in park/Neutr., otherwise stalling.

Hey folks,

I suspect I need to tune the carb a bit (maybe this should be in the carb section?) but I'm at a loss and would prefer to have some advice before I start looking in the wrong spot.

Anyway, the car is a 1987 with a pre-86 350, and a TH350 tranny. The car has been de-computerized (no computer at all, not counting the MSD box) Edelbrock 600 CFM carb, performer pro intake, stock smogger heads, stock cam (I think? - hard to tell), headman headers, MSD ignition and coil.

When I have the car in park or neutral, the idle is on the high side, around 1500 to 2000 RPM. However, when I put it in gear (reverse or drive), the idle drops VERY low, to around 600 to 800 RPM. The car has a tendency to try to stall at stops, and it's a bear to reverse it anywhere, as it requires me to shift into reverse, then quickly punch it (causing tire slippage/burnout) and hope and pray I don't run into anything while I get it rolling. It is constant 100% when the car is cold, however once it warms up to 230 degrees, it happens about 80% of the time, the other times it will just barely hold idle, often forcing me to slip it into neutral waiting for the light to change. I can turn up the idle, more, but it already sounds like its idling too fast.

Is this a carb issue, or should I just crank up the idle, damn the fuel burn and go with it?

I would check your choke adjustment, idle/air screws and the timing. It sounds like your tune is all off.

The choke is manual, and except for cold starts, its left wide open. As for vacuum, this car doesn't use any (ignition is electronic, all the vacuum ports on the carb are blocked)

I wish I could find more info on tuning edelbrock carbs. I've found plenty of books on rochester and holley carbs, but NONE on edelbrock. Since the carb came with the car, I don't have any info. I'll keep searchin 3GO and the net, but I'm at a loss on tuning it right now.

I'm having a seperate issue with timing that I'll be starting another thread for. I'll pop the link in here once its posted.
