cam selection
im going with a carb soon on my 305.
and im looking at these comp cams cam/lifter/spring/misc/timing chain kits
now my question is: if i get one of these that has a higher lift than uh.. i think .480 (l03) dont the springs included in the kit allow me to run a higher lift than the .480?

The springs aren't the only thing determining maximum lift. You also have to worry about the valve guide to retainer clearance.

Unless you have the heads machined for more lift (milling the guide bosses down).
Another method, not as expensive, are +.050" valve stem locks. I have a set of these currently installed. Retainers with the same function also exist.
But otherwise, yes, .460-.470 is a decent accepted value. Just be sure to dummy it up and rotate the engine by hand a few times first to check clearances.
