EST module bad?

I have a 1988 formula 350 and i couldnt get the car to idle well, and would just die after a few seconds. I pulled the brown/white wire or the EST wire and it starts and runs fine now. My question is what are the consequences of running the car without it, i know it runs on static timing, so would that make the car lean out because of the inablility to change timing to suit the needs of the TPI? thanks
