Car bogs down...
I was hoping someone could help me
...I LOVE 3rd gen camaros, but know nothing on how to work on an engine or whatnot.
I have a 91, RS, 305. Its all stock, and I wanna keep it that way, but it has this bogging down problem. Ive been told by a few friends that they BELIEVE its the fuel pump. I tell mechanics that and they say yeah as soon as they hear it, I think all they see is money signs. I know it NEEDS fixed before this winter hits or Im gonna be screwed. Like I said, 1991, RS, 305tbi, stock...Im the 3rd owner, the previous owner was a middle-aged female who owned it since June 92 at 5,000miles and I bought it on January 05 at 161,000miles, it now has 167,000miles, and she did take very good care of it, from inside to out.
What the car does is, on a fresh start...hasnt been ran all day, first start of the day....is it will take a lil longer then what needed to fire up...just keep turning but no fire...after giving it gas like 6times, it fires up but sounds weak....I'll rev it up a few times and it then sounds fine...Now, when Im driving, I have to take and floor it, and wait a little bit and then it will take off...a little bit as in...floor it, 1,2,3,4, take off...
...I will do that a few times and it then runs fine for a little bit and then is back to the bogging down, or the 1,2,3,4 take off....
Sometimes after driving for a while, it wants to stay too warm...and after Im sitting and idling in Drive, I go to take off and its sluggish, doesnt want to move and a few times it has shut off on me. After it shuts off, I wait a bit for it to cool down, and start it up....it will take average, 6 trys to get it going but while trying, it will back fire.
Also, Ive tried to power break it a few times to see what it does and when it didnt want to do that, it would either shut off, or the engine would just make a putt putt sound and do nothing with the tires. No
for me, its all
instead....although smiles wouldnt be the right facial expression for it.
Could all this be from just the fuel pump? Or is it more complicated then that?
I just know about every 3rd fill up, I go and get fuel system cleaners and an octane booster and Im already putting premium in it. I know its not helping much but I do feel improvement every so often.
Any feedback would be GREAT!

I would check the fuel pressure first before changing the fuel pump. Also, how old is the cat on the car? With that many miles on the car the cat could be bad. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Well see thats another thing...I did have the fuel filter changed...and I was told it was like one psi off from what the guy said it should be, which I have no idea what the reading was. Im not sure on the cat. It looks fairly decent...although the fitting holding it on are definately old, but its like I said earlier...the lady that previously owned took such good care of it, the underbody is awesome...
