Hydraulic floor jack Repair

I've got one of these Larin 3 ton floor jacks, and lately it well slowly lower over an hour or so under load.
Does anybody know what needs to be done to service these jacks. Does all need is hydraulic fluid, the jack does have a zerk fitting, or does this sound like a seal ?
(Lost instruction a while ago)

Sounds like one of the seals on the pressure side is bleeding off.

If you have the handle turned so that it wont lower and it still does, it might be time for a new one or a rebiuld of the old one.

FWIW...most jacks will bleed a little over that much time...thats what jackstands are for.

some older jacks use a flat leater washer type seal, if it has that flip the seal over and use the other side of it. if it's o rings or a vee type seal replace them. first make sure the fluid level is correct. i wouldn't be trusting a jack to hold anything up, use jack stands.

I agree on the jackstand idea. The jack is just used to lift the car, not maintain it safely.

How do you know it lowers over an hour? Don't the jackstands hold the car up? The zerk is just to lube the pivot point.

I guess I'm busted !!!
Well, sometimes I just throw it under there to do little things, nothing where my whole body is under there, but things like an oil filter - BLAM.

Just one day It started making a ticking noise under load, and would go flat after about an hour. This realy opened my eyes not to trust these jacks, not even for a second !!! I mean these could let go at any time, 3 tons or 50 tons it doesn't matter. Oh well, I think I'll use it to jack things up. I'm going to have to run out, and get some smaller jack stands.

Oh yea, I had a experience with my Camaro rolling off ramps about 8 years ago, almost runing me over. So you guys should also spread to word to use wheel chocks. I hear alot fokes putting to much faith in the parking praw.

Thanks----

Ron

RT,

Better to get "busted" by a few of us than 3,400 pounds of 'F' Car in your face.

Get some good jack stands (four of them) and then you can be fairly safe. Save the jack for raising and lowering only, and the occasional transmission, shocks, springs, and differential service.
