My Trans Am has got 205,ooo miles-never had engine work other than waterpump, radiator and 4 700r4 transmissions.Still runs 90mph 1/4 mile and uses 1/2 quart of oil every 1000 miles.Who said 305s are junk? How much farther can I go and she gets the hell ran out of it at least 2 times a day-its never been babied!

I have a 1990 Formula with a few mods. Original engine, never opened up, has 185,000. Ran 14's at 96MPH about 5,000 miles ago. Uses no oil. Still runs great. I think I'm going to have to install nitrous, have some fun, and then put a new one in.

85 Z-28 5.0 TPI, 215,000 mi. just water pump, radiator, reg stuff replaced. I don't think the valve covers have ever been off. I had to take the intake (TPI) off once because the thermostat housing leeked and when I went to replace it a bolt broke off into the manifold. I had to remove the manifold to get the broken bolt removed. The ORIGINAL 700R-4 trans was rebuilt after 185,000 mi. Still runs good and strong. Oil pressure is still up there...that just amazes me. Most sensors ares still original (except O2).

198,000 on 305, no major work on engine. Had blown head gasket from overheat, replaced radiator, fan motor, tranny still works fine, smoke on start up from leaky valve stem seals. Lost rear end at about 150,000 miles, pin slipped out of spider and fried carrier bearing. Car still runs fine, needs front end work, headlight is acting up. I love it and am going to try to keep it because the body is straight except for driver door damage from before I got it that was not repaired very well.

Damn - that's all pretty good! I guess I'm trying NOT to let mine blow up and do regular maintenance on it. I got a '91 L98 with 102k on, but the only real engine thing I did was replace the timing chain at 100k - other things have crapped out - water pump and stuff, nothing real major. Pulled my tranny a couple of weeks ago for a rebuild, but found out the hard way it wasn't the problem. Oh well - call it more preventive maintenance. Overall, the engine itself is still real "sound".

I have an 91 RS 305 TBI, purchased new. The car has 203,xxx miles on it. Other than regular stuff like alternators (2), water pump, fuel pump, battery and so on, no really major stuff. The valve cover have never been off the 305 and the 700R4 has only had fluid changes. The car will burn 1/2 quart of Mobile 1 5w-30 every 3,500 miles. If it sits a few days, it's a smoke screen cause of the leaky valve guides.

My almost totally stock 1992 L98 Heritage Z28 has about 10600 miles on it. Only changes have been the water pump and replaced the battery last june. Yes, I rarely get an opportunity to drive it, but with all the shows up here in the Northwest in Aug & Sept it'll see some more miles soon.

hmmm, im at about 133,000. nothing major. intake gaskets, alternators, need a rear main seal but cant figure out how to get the motor unbolted from the tranny. just about every sensor and a fuel injector. smokes when i first start it so the heads will be coming off when i get the other one running. other than that still going fine

Let's see......192,230 as of when I parked it this afternoon. Typical stuff, like water-pump, etc... Trans was removed once for what I thought was a cracked flexplate (Wasn't.) Valve covers were off once for valve seals (Needs it again) and that's about it. Just regular maintanence stuff otherwise.

Car still runs great, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Whos got the highest miles 3rd gen out there?( without engine work !)
This should have been without any work or least amount of work. If tearing the engine apart is the only thing you haven't done, it's not much indication of reliability or durability.

Anyways...I will go for the least miles with plenty o' work.

At only 20k replaced the rear under warranty. The rear rotors were blue from heat and stress cracked, so they replaced them at the same time (Damn Autobahn made me do it ). BTW, the cruise control only works up to 120 mph.

At 30k replaced the POS T-5 under warranty. (Damn Autobahn, again, and ATF (too thin to protect ****) conspired on this one.) Clutch was toast so they replaced it under warranty while they were at it, and I talked them into an aluminum driveshaft, too.

At 75k back in the states and the ol' 305 smoked pretty good on start up. Valve seals/guides were toast (damn high rpm Autobahn again I'm sure). It ran good, though. Then it started using a fair amount of oil so I switched from Mobile 1 to regular 20W50 dino oil.

At 85k swapped Trick Flows, Crane Cam, new clutch, whoo-ah! Wish I had the chance to drive that combo in Germany to have seen the improvement.

At ~100k all sorts of electrical gremlins cropped up. Replaced the distributor and the 'puter to be on the safe side.

At 135k yanked the whole mess and swapped in a ZZ4 short block with freshened Trick Flows, new flywheel, clutch, etc.

Closing note...anyone who gets 100k+ on their stock clutch must drive like a cheerleader.

My old L69 305 had 200,000 on it when I swapped in my 350. I sold it to a guy with a SS Monte Carlo, and as far as I know it is still kicking today without any internal engine work done to it. He wants to rebuild it when it goes out. I told him to call me, and I would help him get parts since I live in Denver, and he lives in Nebraska. Not too many good parts stores in a town of 9,000 people! I haven't heard from him yet...so must still be going.

137,000 miles and nothing but the a/c compressor has ever gone out...except the crankshaft pulley, but that was only a $30 repair so I don't think it counts.

It's been almost a year since I posted that. Here's my update: Both left side wheel bearings had to be replaced at 221,385 miles. The front brake pads as well. Cost $119 for all of the above installed.

The RS currently has 221,883 miles on it. I run Mobile 1 5w-30, oil consumption is increased to 1qt per 2,500 miles.

No engine work of any kind. (just oil changes)

No tranny work of any kind. (just fluid changes)

I bought the car new, so I know the RS engine and tranny haven't had any problems.

9,365,043,000,000 miles, give or take a few...

O.K. Follow me on this one and I think I've got you all beat.

Considering that on average all of my miles are away from home then back to it, the total mileage traveled east and west are about equal. Realizing that the earth is 22,700 miles in diameter, and that is rotates 365.24 times a year, and the car is almost 15 years old, it would have traveled 124,364,220 miles in that time. Add to this the fact that the earth travels around the sun in an eliptical orbit with a circumference of 585 million miles, and that has happened 15 times (so far), the total mileage is approaching 8.76 trillion miles. Add this to the 40 billion miles that our solar system travels around the center of the Milky Way every year, and the total mileage is really closer to 9.365 trillion miles. Never mind the 47,000 miles on the odometer - that is basically insignificant by comparison.

Even solid nickel/titanium asteroids start to wear out after that many miles - it's no wonder I need new front tires!

ROFLMAO!!!! Nice one!! LOL Mines got somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-100K miles on it. That I know of it is on it's 4th rear end, and second transmission. Lots little things have been done to the motor. After finding out that it is probably just a 305 though, it's never gonna make it to 200+k! I'll pull it out and get a 350+ in there, rebuild the 305, and sell the wimp on e-bay

The first speedometer said 118,000. The new one has just turned 86,000. And that was with it disconected for about two years. So that would be a grand total of 204,000 miles, plus the two years of daily driving. That would put it at about 250,000. I am now replacing the completely stock 305, just because I want a 350.

It seems to me that the 305 cars run longer

I have 158,000 miles currently on my 87 IROC. I beat it like a rental car daily and it seems to like it.

It needs valve seals, but other than that, the rings, etc. are fine.

My 88 Vette had over 250,000 miles on it when I sold it 2 years ago. It never used any oil, the valve seals were fine, and it never leaked a drop.

I have to give credit where credits due...

THANKS MOBIL 1 !!!

I'll add a vote for that one! (If I lived in Chicago, I could add three or four votes...)

I'm at about 230,000; never even removed valve covers. I've replaced the water pump, alternator(a few times), injectors, and transmission. (The fool that owned the car before me filled the T5 half with gear oil instead of ATF, it killed the syncros.) Even the A/C hasn't even been recharged and it still blows cold air.
