Timing Chain...need replacing???
I have a 92 Camaro RS V8 TBI with 78,000 miles. Its is time to change the timing chain. While Im at it...should I replace the cams and rollers?? What would be the best combo for my car. I have open filter element, headers, flowmaster catback, and MSD 6AL
i wouldn't be changing the chain at 80,000 miles unless i had a problem. it would be a lot more work to replace cam and lifters ,you'd need to take the top end apart and not just the front of the engine. however if you were wanting to upgrade cams now ould be the time to do if you have the front tore down.

NoCan,
The V-8s use a steel chain and metal gears. You should be able to get 150,000 miles from a timing chain before it stretches to excess. You may be generalizing the timing drive too much. A timing BELT on an OHC engine needs to be replaced regularly as a preventive measure, but a timing CHAIN in a push rod engine isn't as susceptible to failure.
Timing belts that drive overhead cams should be changed every 70,000 miles to prevent the possibility of breakage and severe engine damage. Just another reason to run a good old American V-8 - just as efficient, more potential, and not as frail as the "throwaway 4-cylinder" designs.
