Mega 305

Just to show what can be done with a 305,here's specs on one from an article in H.P. Chevy Dec.93:305[.030 os.]AFR alum.heads[1.99/1.55]appox. 9/1 cr. cam 218/223@.050 lift 460/470 cl.110 1.5 ratio rockers. Edelbrock RPM intake and Holley 650 dp carb. Horse Power 387 @ 6000 rpm's Torque 367.6 @ 4000 rpm's. Now these were big heads for a 305 [ int.vol.190]but a good set of gm.alum. or after market with 1.94/1.50/170cc/9.5:1 comp. should make some decent hp. So don't despair if you have a 305 !

someone guestimate the HP of this combo, 305, AFR heads, 9-10:1 comp. crane 2032 roller cam 214/220 ~.48x"/.494" lift int/exh with 1.6 roller rockers, probably LT1 style intake manifold(EFI), hooker LTs. Will there be enough cam? I want ~340-350hp.

Also a stock TPI or Siamesed Base and 1 5/8" mildly ported edelbrock headers.(I currently own these pieces so..) If you think either of these would be better. No suggestions about low end torque please.

That is pretty darn impressive....
I've always thought that if you had a perfectly good 305 already in your engine bay, and it didn't need to be replaced, why not just make it nearly 400 horsepower? Is someone going to think your engine's weak if it's only 367 horsies? Probably not...

You should always think what the intended use of an engine before building it,not every one needs or wants a 400+ hp eng. I could have built a 350,which is what I'd recommend be cause it has more cubes and cheaper to build, but I had a 86 305 block already and got a great deal on a new set of gm alum. heads and fft trw .030 os pistons.I decided a horsepower per cu.in. was enough for every driving and good performance in a S-10 2wd blazer. Can't wait to finish the project just to see how it performs.

Heads/cam/rockers ~$2000 carb intake is like $180 i think, LT1 probably about $350+ assuming you have some way to get a custom chip for cheap, otherwise add $250 for burning your own chips and alot of time.
