starting problem
starting problem
when i start my 88 gta, it turns over for a while before it will start. plugs and wires are good. when car has been sitting for a while, takes longer to start. if i turn it off, 5 min later turn it on, it cranks right up. it's not too bad, it always starts, just kinda annoying. any tips?
Reagan,
You may have a problem with fuel pressure. A failing pressure regulator, pump, or fuel filter can impede fuel flow enough to cause extended cranking on cold starts. The fuel pump relay should also be checked for operation, since a failing relay will not allow for fuel priming until the engine oil pressure is raised to 4-7 PSI from cranking. Can you hear the fuel pump operate for about two seconds when you first turn on the ignition (before cranking/starting)? If not, the relay is suspect.
Another cold start problem can be caused by a failing Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS), MAI/IAT sensor, or failing Cold Start Injector control. The CTS is used by the ECM in colder temperatures to enable a cold start routine that provides extra fuel for starting when the engine coolant is below 104°F and the IAT/MAT sensor is within 20°F of the CTS.
If your engine has a cold start (ninth) fuel injector, the Cold Start Control operates that injector under the same conditions. As I recall, the TPI engines through 1988 have the Cold Start injector.
Any failure of the cold start routine will also cause extended cranking before engine start.
Any more information you can give about the symptoms would be helpful, like a fuel pressure reading.
