65 mph problem

alright, here's my problem. I have used my 82 sport coupe for a daily driver for 4yrs now and it has been the best car i have EVER owned. It came w/ a 4cyl, manual 4spd tranny. Of course, that didnt last very long. Then i swapped the motor for a 305 w/ a 700r4 tranny. Just to get the engine mounts in, etc, etc. I want to get a 350 block soon so that i can finish my project. Heres where the problem comes in. My car shakes horribly above 65 and stops above 80 (sometimes). I have asked many people about this problem and they all give me different answers. My WHOLE car vibrates! Ive eliminated some of the simpler things. Ive got the wheels balanced, aligned, new struts helped a little. Could it be the driveshaft? any ideas if or what part of the suspension would cause this? Im sure that my camaro is not the only one that this has happened to. please help me out

Ball joints, and any of the other bearings/suspension parts on the front of the car I would suspect...

Does it vibe at wheel speed, or at driveline speed? Those 2 rates differ by a factor of somewhere around 3; ought to be fairly easy to pin down.

Common wheel vibe causes: separated tire, wheel balancing, bent wheel, bent axle, loose steering or suspension components; common driveline problems: bent/unbalanced drive shaft, worn trans ext housing bushing, bad pinion bearings

Is it shakeing when the rpm are high or at low rpms aslo between 65-80, If its only when rpms are high i would check you motor mounts, you said you just threw it in to get it in,engine might not be level and you could be feeling the effects of things not excatly lined up at high rpm. Just a thought.

it has been shaking at 65 since it had a 4 cyl. so it couldnt be motor mounts. I guess i will just have to take it to a shop that does free suspension checks. It seems like its shaking at wheel speed. Ive changed rims, tires 3x's. Im clueless!

check your u-joints and driveshaft. Had a real horrible vibration problem in a truck, (yeah, I know, not a thirdgen) felt exactly how you described as "all over" the car, not isolated to one side or end. Turned out my u-joints were really bad, I had them replaced (both), and it was real smooth evr since. The truck had 130k on it, how mant does your 82 have? I'd say there due. GL!
