Have purchased a 1985 IROC-Z that has been sitting in a garage for 2 years. Was in running condition when stored. I Have changed oil and filter, squirted oil in all spark plug cyl holes, will install new plugs, have drained old gas and put new in with HEET water treatnment. Also installed new battery. I am looking for suggestions as what to do further. I am concerned about injectors, computer,etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,BADMAN

 

Check the air filter and intake tract for univited guests, "forcibly evacuate" them, then start it. Allow it to warm up before moving it if at all possible. Monitor for leakage, unusual noises, and anything abnormal while warming up.

Be very wary of the brakes. Check tires thouroughly for checking and cracking.

Plan on changing all fluids before you're finished. The coolant can't be good unless the system was flushed just before storage. The transmission oil should be changed as well. Check the axle oil level.

The ECM (computer) won't suffer from just sitting there for years. The injectors may have tip deposits from the fuel that evaporated after its last run, but wait until you've run it for a while before considering any action, unless you have an obvious problem.

Plan in changing the fuel filter soon, and possibly twice if the tank shows signs of contamination.

Anything else that arises can be addressed as you discover it. We'll be here.

I remember reading somewhere that you should start the car in neutral and let it run in N instead of park for better lubrication, otherwise you will burn up the clutches, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

 

I will have to check but, I think park offers the same fluid flow but, I will have to check

 

Hmm the pump runs in one of the settings, and in the other it doesn't. I don't remember which is which though. I actually thought the pump ran in park, and not in neutral, but someone else would probably know better than I would.

 

a car sitting that long will have all the oil galleys dry. I would pull the distributor and oil prime the engine to make sure there is fresh oil going to the bearings, lifters, and rocker arms on start up.

 

the pump runs all the time it is driven from the lugs on the tc. it doesnt mater if it is in park or neutral. i say park just incase some of the clutches are stuck together the car wont take off. they wont burn up the clutches arn't applied. sounds like you took care when storing so you should be ok. good luck

 

Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunaly the fuel pump is not working. Have to drop tank and replace. I did prime engine oil by rotating pump gear through dist. inlet. hope to have running in about a week.
