Volts Acting Up

This just started happening last night. When I started the car my volts read about 10, then I gave it some gas and it shot up to 12 and stayed there for a while. It kept dropping throughout the night, even as I was driving. Stayed at 9 for a long time, then down to 8. Gauges started to dim, turn signals were blinking realy slow. When I raced my buddy last week I pulled on him, but last night he pulled on me. My car is also lacking power. My idle moved itself up to 1500rpm, and sometimes started bouncing around. The car would turn over good, but took a while to start. Today I put a new battery in and volts read 10. I have a feeling if I start driving it they will go down. My alternator is a Powermaster and only 1 year old. What the hells goin on?

I noticed that the battery terminal connector on the alternator was loose. I tightened it and this new battery seems to be stayting at 11 volts. But now my car wont idle, RPM just drops and dies. WTF
