-AN refers to sixteenths of an inch, so -8 AN is 8/16 of an inch, there's your half inch

AN is an old term meaning Army/Navy but many people still use it. It's always based on sixteenths of an inch. AN20 would be 20/16 or 1-1/4"

A more modern term for AN fittings is JIC. Joint Industries Council

The AN/JIC fittings use a 37* flare.
