What size are our Speedometers?
What size are our Speedometers?
I'm switching to an aftermarket speedometer for my Trans Am and am wondering if it is a 5" speedo or 3" 3/8 speedo. Thanks.

I've never measured it, but I would say 5", I'm not at my car right now, but I have a 5" tach and from what I can remember it seems to be the same size as the speedo.

The Camaros have about a 5 inch tach/speedo, but I am not sure about birds. Why don't you mesure it? You can't really go by aftermarket mesurements, stock ones don't use any of those standards. Depth is something else to consider.

Do a search of the archives. I had posted a thread about a month ago in the electronics board (I think) about custom instrument clusters. Someone has done this in the past, and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to tell you size he bought. He's got lost of pictures too. Very nice looking!!!

Technically it's a little smaller then 5"'s but you really can't just pullout the old speedo and put in a new one. The cluster prevents you from doing so. I ended up mounting my gauges to the outside trim panel. the Tach and Speedo were 5 inches the other gauges I went with 2 1/16. You'll also need a new speedo cable as aftermarket gauges use a threaded cable while the stock is a push in. Not too mention you'll need a couple of inches in length.
