Going rate for Vortec heads at the salvage yard?
No doubt prices will vary, but can y'all provide any info so I have a little insight if I decide to go shopping?

Yes, prices will vary. Check around.
As a baseline, new can be had for $500/pair. http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/3129...-Assembled.htm

Will you have to spend more than $300 to make them "like new"?

That is the consideration. Trying to get details from the yard is like pulling teeth. It's only 40 miles away so I may just go take a look.
I'd guess $300 would be close, but the thing is I *might* be able to include in that $300, or a little more, upgrade to screw-in studs and the guide work to allow higher lift since those mods add the same cost to a new set of Vortecs.
Hopefully, the yard will accept a lower offer too, but maybe not.
If everything comes up to $500-$600, I'd probably go for it. Too much more than that and might just as well go to Trick Flows, or maybe just fix up the stock L98 cast irons with mild porting, etc. since they have only 38K miles. After all, not trying to build 1/4 killer.
No matter which way you go, it seems the costs pencil out very closely once you get to the heads - unless you are talking all out race heads, then it's really big $$.
