head rebuild on high-mileage engine?
My 91 305 TPI has 188,000 miles on it. Bought it from my father-in-law who drove the mess out of it, didn't change the oil and ran it hot for 3 years. Now it smokes badly, at idle and on the road. The oil return holes were totally plugged up with crud, so I did the best to unclog them. I don't have tags on it yet (doubt I can pass inspection) so I can't take her out much. But it seems that the smoking has calmed down a little after a few times around the block. The more often I crank it, the better it is. Let it sit a few days and start it, smoke city for about 15 minutes and then just a haze. Is it a waste of time and money getting the heads redone?
sounds like its more then just the heads, 188,000 miles, poorly maintained and smoking like hell is a complete engine rebuild time. putting money into a over 100,000 mile car is like pissing in the wind.
Yea Tempest, I think that would make the most sense, too. I can't stand the car looking like a "mosquito sprayer"...and I forgot to mention, the car sat for almost 2 years. My neighbor keeps telling me to take it out and run the hell out of it on the highway for awhile and it should quit smoking. Thanks
