Spring seats
I have removed the springs from a set of "416" 305 heads and the spring seats are different heights to make up for the differance with the spring rotators on the exh.
What is the recommended thing to do? Machine them to the same height?
Thanks!

Either reinstall the exhaust rotators or
get some spring seat shims.
get some spring seat shims.
Several cam manufacturers offer spring cups that are thick enough to compensate for the lack of an exhuast valve rotator. The rotators are of little value, as time has indicated, and add unnecessary mass to the moving parts of the valve train. It would make little sense to install performance lightweight spring caps and retainers over rotators.
Comp Cams has the set of eight, part number 4779-8, that compensates for the 0.300" height of the rotator, provides a better wear surface for the spring, and has a rim that keeps the valve spring centered, nulike a stack of regular spring shims. The sets can usually be found for about $25.00. There is no machining required with these spacers.

most and i repete MOST aftermarket springs are made to be installed without the rotators to achieve the reqired install height. it's best to measure each spring and seat with the reatiner you plan on installing. i dummy mine up without a spring and check the height and write in on duct tape on the head close to where it'll go and keep all the parts in order to reinstall where they were checked. liek vader said the spring cups will give you .050 or so and are required for aluminum heads.

I would be installing some springs and retainers for .530 lift (.480 plus .050 clearance right?).
The spring seats for the part number given are listed as for a big block. Are they the same size as a SB spring?
Oh yeah, no rotators.

Another question has come to mind.
What if I want to install larger diameter springs in these heads?
Do you just machine the seats larger but both the same depth?
Thanks! Darrell

OK guys I'm having no luck with this one. I've got the heads at the shop and they're tanked and magnafluxed. BUT, I have called around and called Comp Cams and no one seems to have a spring seat spacer for the SB. The number that Vader gave was correct but for the BB and Comp says that they dont have one for the SB. They suggest shimming.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Found out my problem IE: no problem that a couple of shims will not fix. The differance was not as much as I had been told. Thanks for the help!
