weird engine noise

weird engine noise
quick question here..
i drive a 82 T/A with a 305 in her. When i accerate the car, i hear this noise comming from the engine, it sounds like a shot of compressed air or something.. you can really hear it well when i am like 3rd gear and at like 2000 rpm or something, and just touch the gas.. gives that sound of like a shot of compressed air or something.. just another note is my car does burn a bit of oil too...
could it be that the compression is off now or something?
and ONE more quick question.. how offten should you get your timing done on the engine? i dont think mine has had one in while..

Unless your distibutor is loose your timing should be fine, but it wouldn't hurt to check it with a timing light. As far as that noise, I couldn't tell you.
