If ya got deep pockets I'd build the biggest smallblock with the best heads, rods and crank going. Check out the Bill Mitchell engine shop strokers and others.

There's no replacement for displacement.

if you got time, 400 is the way to go.. the issue w/400 is the details you need to go through to make sure everything is right. Not really financial.
man im not rich and i'm building a 400

when the green flag drops the bull$hit stops
Gold 85 Camaro with no motor, pulled the 2.8 to make way for a 350 wich was pulled this summer because a 406 will replace it. The 406 sports a stock bottom end with ARP bolt holding it togeter, flat top hyper pistons. Comp 282 solid cam(.528 lift with 1.6 rockers) Savin up for my Sportsmen 2 heads right now. still Have the perf RPM and 650 DP i used on the 350. Headers and 3inch exhust. Shooten for mid to low 12s next summer

If you were rich you wouldn't even think about using a SBC and if you did you wouldn't be making soming small like a 400. More likle a 434.
Biggest engine that can be dropped into a thirdgen "easily" is a short deck 540" merlin engine. Going to a tall deck BBC will require a few modifications such as no heater assembly or wiper motor but you can go to a 622" engine.

not a 350 or a 400, but a combination-377. The 400 block with the 350 crank-forged, preferably an aluminum block with a solid roller cam(around 550 lift), the best heads you can buy ported beyond belief, at least 10.5:1 compression, aluminum rods, perfectly balanced forged pistons as loght as they come, electric waterpump, superram, or other expensive efficient fuel injection, with at least one turbo, full length headers true duals.... ... i could go on and on.
If I was a rich snob I'd buy a BMW M3. But I'm not a snob, so if I was rich I'd buy a new Firebird or Camaro... then again it depends how rich I am. But since I'm not a snob and not rich, I keep looking for a 3rd gen Camaro. Go with whatever engine makes you happy.
If I was rich I'd build an all alluminum bigblock with two more cylinders grafted on. Theres no replacement for displacement.

If I had the money I would drop a supercharged 327 in and blast the crap out of 99% of the BBC's!

If I was a rich snob, I wouldn't be talking to you...LOL
If I were a rich snob I would want to build a fast "sleeper", we're talking something that could compete with the exotic sports cars......Zero to 60 in around 4 seconds, handling that is out of this world, top end speed over 200 mph......
In Chevy Rumble they featured a supercharged small block 427....something along those lines. But instead of the super chicken version, rather a twin turbo...set up properly!!!
Oh, and of course the 6 speed, suspension mods out the wazoo, and a hefty, very heft rear end.

I'm not a rich snob, but I put my money where my mouth is. I went for a 400.
What's "rich" got to do with it? If you have to buy a core anyway, a 400 doesn't really cost any more to rebuild than a 305... a few technical hurdles to overcome but nothing that a brainless moron (like me) can't handle.
