Kinda silly question

...regarding the distributor.
Is there only one correct position for it? I mean, as long as it goes down all the way, you can always just make whichever position on the cap be #1 (assuming the engine is at TDC) - or is that wrong?
If there is only one correct position, what is it with the engine in TDC?

Just wanting to double check before going on.

Thanks,

Ken

Yeah but I wouldnt reccomend it, just put it in the right way and be done with it.

EDIT: now that I think about it, I'm not sure...

Well, the rotor is pointing at whichever cylinder should be firing at that time.

So if cylinder #1 is at TDC, it should be pointing to that terminal.

Remember that this is for the compression stroke. The piston comes to the top for the exhaust stroke as well.

Clear as mud?

Yup. I've had to intentionally install them way out of the "normal" position to clear larger vacuum advance/retard assemblies behind aftermarket manifolds. The ECM and coil don't care where it is pointing, as long as you can time it correctly.

Yeah, I know that part - I guess my question wasn't clear. What I mean is, is the when you slip in the distributor after having it out, it will slip in in more than one position, which again will lead to the rotor pointing in different directions depending on how it is turned before slipping it in.
My question is, when the distributor is in place, and the engine in TDC (firing), should the rotor be in one position, say straight forward for example, and no other direction? Or, does it not matter, you can just slap the plug cable for #1 on the terminal to which it is pointing, no matter where it is?

Hope that was somewhat easier to understand..

Thanks,

Ken
