Car eating alternators.

my friend has an 86 Thunderbird that has a short somewhere. He has bought a new alternator, voltage regulator, and battery. None of those solved the problem. So it has to be a short. Where could the short be located? What are the possible places that shorts normaly happen on cars?
But, how is it that the new alternator only lasted 10-20 miles? I'm browsing other posts for other options.

Was the battery fully charged (and the negative battery cable disconnected) when he put the new alternators in?

How do you know it has a short? I mean, is it possible that you just got a bad alternator? Reman alternators are notorious for going bad not long after being installed.

"new"? Or "rebuilt"... _HUGE_ difference...

If they're rebuilt, go to another store to have them honor the warrantee... otherwise buy a -new- one..., or rebuild it yourself...

I'm not saying it can't be a short... hell it could be anything including you hooking it up wrong... I'm just saying that rebuilt alternators are shoddy at best... (for the most part)
