How long has it been since you changed your spark plugs?

I see you're in england, that is cool
Things to check - fuel pressure.
Check it before you even put the key in it in the morning.
Then turn the key to the "on" position and check the fuel pressure.
Then have your wife/kid/neighbor/someone walking the street crank the car while you watch the cranking fuel pressure
Check idle fuel pressure
Check WOT fuel pressure
Check it after you turn the car off
Check it 5 minutes after you turn the car off
Check it 10 minutes after you turn the car off
Check it 1 hour after you turn the car off
(those 4 w/o putting the key in the igntion)
report back with numbers
Check your timing. Stock it should be 6* advanced (with the EST unplugged).
If all of that checks out OK you can always bring your starter in to just about any parts store (atleast here in the US you can) and ask them to test the starter.
Good luck and report back
