Difference Between Pre-87 and later heads

Looking into buying some new aftermarket heads for my 355 hydr roller block with a superram. The problem is i keep finding deals on pre-87 heads or ones set up for solid roller cams. So what is the difference between heads in the years and cam choice ?

The angle of the center intake bolts is different.

The almighty pre 87 smogger heads too! damn pieces of junk...

I also believe the guides for the pushrods are cut different for the roller setups.

Aftermarket heads aren't smoggers.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
"Setup for solid roller cams" = better valve springs

Don't avoid a good set of heads because they're already properly prepped.

You can always install lighter valve springs, if you want to downgrade them.

87 & newer have intake center bolts at a different angle.
86 & up have centerbolt valve covers.
82 & up have self aligning rocker arms.
The above only refers to OEM heads, aftermarket may utilize a combination of the above features or none at all.
