just put a new carb and intake on today (holly street dom and holly 600) the vacuum hoses are driving me nuts. i was careful to pay attention to where all the hoses went but the new carb and intake look totally different. question is, can i remove all of the emissions control cr@p? if so how can i tell what vacuum lines are what?

Only way your going to do it is if you dont have any emissions testing, Even with all emissions equipment some of these cars have trouble passing the test.

 

problem is, some of the stuff wont fit back on due to the manifold carb set up. there is some sort of saucer looking sensor that was mounted off to the side of me carb that now will not fit. the manifold came with a plate to covet the holes though. this part is pretty big, looks important for the system, you know what i mean?

 

Is the 'saucer' mounted on your old intake, that is probably the EGR. Kinda important to emissions.

Taking all or any of the emissions stuff of will give HP gains and weight savings.

And the "saucer" does sound like your talking about the EGR. Part of emissions control, Most likely will need it to pass emissions.

I doubt it is even 2 HP @ WOT. EGR valve is closed @ WOT due to no vacuum signal to open it. The cat can kill power IF it is clogged, but just replace it with a new highflow. If the stock air cleaner is holding you back upgrade to a L69 dual snorkel. The smog pump takes less than 1 rwhp to turn over. Never Know when we might need the cleaner air. My 1983 is about to be exempt but the smog stuff is staying. Blows super clean.

 

i plan to replace it later when i have the money. its just when i was taken it apart alot of the hoses and stuff were dry rotted. im not worried about losing horsepower. im just worried about putting it all back together . i need to get the car back on the road for now. just had an inspection done this month too.

 

That right there pretty much kills you on a visual inspection. Holleys aren't particularly well known for their emissions friendliness, although they do have models intended for the pre-cat era.

There are vacuum diagrams on the FAQ forum. You should also have one on your hood or radiator support. You're basically turning this into a non-emissions vehicle, so hook up what you need to make it run.

That should eventually include the vacuum advance for the distributor you don't yet have.

If you put on a non-computer carb, you need a non-computer distributor as well. Computer control is an all-or-nothing thing. Either you leave all the computerized parts on, or you replace every function of the computer.
