To fix, or to have new rebuilt, that is the question....
Hi all, I have found out that my v8 305 in my 84 t/a is blowing blue smoke a few secs and quite a bit on every fireup but then it stops within 7-10 seconds and I was told by several ppl to keep an eye on the oil and just go with it. I was also told that to fix it would require about $300 some odd bucks. Now the question is....is it better to fix it with the 300 some odd bucks.....or is it better to add about 600 more to get a rebuilt 305 v8 or is it better to get my own engine rebuilt/overhauled?
Which is better and less costly?
Also what are your feelings on rebuilt engines say from advanced auto parts or autozone, etc?
i did some looking around and autozone told me they have a rebuilt 305 v8 with a 18 month warranty for $877.39 but I have to give them my engine in partial trade/payment. They said the engine comes with everything but valve covers, oil pan, carb, etc. Is this a good deal?
also can I keep on running the car the way it is or is it close to blowing up already and I need to park it? Right now my 84 t/a is my daily driver.
and a friend of mine said that he suggests i skip autozone and find a local builder in the NC area so all NC members please help too
All feedback is most welcome
thanks everyone

if its right at fireup its probly the valve seals. its not alot to worry about you can still drive it no prob. just keep an eye on the oil level.
valve seals arnt too hard to replace. you can get them at autozone for like 40 bucks. i dont know how much of a DYI guy you are but you can change them in an afternoon. ive got this tool that you can screw into the sparkplug hole and it hooks to an airline from the compressor. it keeps air pressure in the cyl. so you can take the springs off the valve and not have to worry about droping the valve in the cyl.

If you cant do the repair for valve seals (thats what it sounds like) yourself i would just keep an eye on the oil. It really can hurt to replace used oil with brand new oil between oil changes. Maybe every car should come from the factory with this "option". Hehe.

Cute.......Any Real Mechanic knows that's a line. My friend wants to fix the car not break it further.....................& just for FYI......If you don't replace the oil, then there's not an oil change is it?Joe
