I just bought my first car. '85 Z28. Got it for 1200. Its one of the best camaros around but it doesnt have cat on it. The kid cut it off because "it wasn't loud enough." Anyways, I was just wondering how much HP I will lose when I put it back. Its about 2 to 2 1/2 feet long. My sisters boyfriend said if its that big it wont lose any... I know I should belive him since he is an excellent machanic and is one of the highest paid around here.. Also how much quiter will it be?

It will be quieter, but that depends on the cat you put on it. The power reduction also depends on what cat you use. If you have a fairly restrictive muffler, the cat won't hurt power much. Why do you want the cat back on?

there was an article about this in Hot Rod...at least I think it was hot rod, and when they pulled the catalytic converter the car actually made 2 horsepower less than putting a high flow converter on.

 

I have to put that cat back on because I have to pass emissions in MA which really sux, because belive me, the car sounds hot. By the way i have a Flowmaster Exhaust, im guessing 80 series.
