How to fix the trip meter?

My trip meter hasnt worked since I bought the car. The odo works still, but when i hit the reset button for the trip it just kinda flops around to whatever numbers it feels like and goes from there. and not necessarly in any sort of order. it likes to count by tens and hundreds anyone got a fix for this? id like to get it working. thanks.

Sounds to me like someone beat the hell out of it, if it's anything like a dodge speedo (the only kind I've ever seen disassembled) You're pretty much screwed, the teeth on the gear are probably null and void.

I remember hearing about this on this board before. It seems one of the gears that conrols the odomoter is made of plastic and is prone to breakage. Replacing that gear should solve your problem. I don't know if GM sells that as a part, if they don't find a speedo in a junkyard and pull it's gear.

On the two that I've seen, it wasn't a gear or any teeth, it was the hole that the wheels' axle goes through. So the whole assembly has enough play to be pushed back and the gears jumps a tooth, which is why some catch and some don't (turning seemingly random numbers). I never fixed it, I just switched to a digital cluster.

As I recall, there are two small and very fragile plastic 'hooks' that hold the roll in place. When they broken, the roll is free in the housing. At any rate, the problem is common.
