Idling problem.... please help.
New engine.... just started about 3 nights ago. Cams broken in, oils changed. Timing is set to 6* (in drive). Problem I'm having is... the car idles in park at about 950rpms but will not idle in any gear. Now the proper way to set the idle air control is to unhook the IAC and set the idle to 450rpms according to the tech article. I doubt very seriously if I could get my car to even try and idle at 450rpms. Fuel pressure is set at about 40psi and you can see my mods in my signature. Do you think my car needs more than 6* timing(in park) and that's why it won't idle in gear? Please help.

If you have an auto tranny, I would check to make sure your TC lockup is working properly.

Set the timing to what you car likes best... timing is like fuel octane, run whatever works the best for you...
Fuel pressure should probably be higher...
To adjust the idle screw, disconnect the IAC, EST and any other sensors that affect engine speed or mixture and set to about 450 RPM's, if it won't idle that low, you've got other engine problems...

For your idle setting, 450 rpm is recommended for a stock engine. Since you've got a cam and other high performance goodies you're gonna want to set the minimum idle higher than that. Just set the idle (w/ IAC unplugged) as low as you possibly can without the car dying. No offense intended for Xenodrgn, but if it won't go to 450 that does not mean you have engine problems (although it might if your engine was stock). When my camaro had the old 305 with a cam it wouldn't go lower than 600, and it was not sickly by any means.

And in response to your question about timing: computer controlled cars are pretty darn good at keeping themselves running when the timing is off. For example, when I put the engine in my firebird the timing was severely retarded, like so retarded it wasn't even on the timing tab. That means at least 15* retarded. But the computer managed to compensate and keep the car running even under those circumstances.
If your timing is really at 6* then I seriously doubt that is what is causing your problem. Make sure you set the timing with the tan wire/harness unplugged. This is very important.
