Supercharger Kits

Sometime in the future I would like to have a cutom engine built for my 91' camaro, equipped with a supercharger. I have seen kits for bolting a supercharger to a stock tpi. Would a stock engine beable to handle the extra horse power, my guess is not for long. I have seen some pistons that are designed especially for supercharger applications with inverted domes. Differences like these is what leads me to believe that a stock engine wouldn't be able to handle a supercharger. Am I right or wrong. And do any of you guys have any input as far as superchargers go.
I have always thought of superchargers as being something that you would only see on a *****, but now you can pretty much find them on anything on the road.

I always thought of Turbos are for ricers... and superchargers and blowers for Muscle Cars...

yeah i agree... someone correct me if im wrong, but:

turbo's are for ricers, sc's are for muscle cars. The reason why you see turbos on a small ***** car is because their engines have relatively low displacement (most are 4 cyl, some 6) & power and since turbo's utilize the exhaust gases, unlike SC's which utilize the crank, it is more efficient to use a turbo over a sc. Now however, if you have a big beefy v8, the power lost to power the supercharger really wont be noticed if you car is already putting out decent hp/torque stock.

Actually, with all things equal, a turbo is more efficient than a supercharger.

I don't see the reasoning in your argument BAK12484...imports have a crankshaft too, in fact my fathers MR2 came with a supercharger from the factory. You know a larger displacement engine will have more exhaust flowing than a 4 cylinder, so couldn't a muscle car better utilize a turbo?

Another point: why are turbo kits so much more expensive than superchargers? I remember seeing a twin turbo kit for an LS1 for about $7000 on the internet, while superchargers are about half that. Thats because this kit gives more power and is more difficult to create than any supercharger that I have seen marketed for an LS1. Have you seen the twin turbo big block in chevy high performance? And why do you think so many third gen fanatics are waiting for a turbo kit to be produced with so many supercharging kits already on the market?

Go to the "power adder" forum and they can probably help you out better.

If this is rice, then may I have some more please?!?! There is a SBC under that "octapus".

A turbo is a power adder. The reason you don't see a blower on 4 bangers is that a supercharger takes A LOT of power to run. Turbos use the wasted power that goes out the exhaust to boost power. That's smart.

That's cool. What's it for?

I'm tired of all this "rice" talk.

I've got a Merkur XR4Ti ( http://communities.msn.com/clemsproj...rkurxr4ti.msnw ), with a turbo on it. Basically its a Mustang SVO engine in escort clothing. If you think I'm a "*****," then give me an email and we'll talk about it .

Superchargers are cool too! Just don't come on here generalizing. People who do that sound like Idiots

Turbos are more expensive because they require a higher grade of parts and machining. Some turbos spins 10's of thousands of revolutions per minute. They really can scream!

They are also a little more complicated.

I think that the main reason we don't see them in thirdgens is because there isn't room to put one in easily and properly. The closer to the exhaust ports the better, but in a third gen, you have to pipe the exhaust quite a distance from the head in order to fit a turbo under the hood.

Turbos absolutely kick butt!!! The best all around power adder, at least IMHO. With juice, you only get it when you add it, a supercharger robs a little power from the low end and has other limitations that a turbo is not constricted by. Ever hear of someone saying they have to keep the RPM under 5000 because it'll blow up their supercharger?

rezinn...

yes i know imports have crankshafts...but they are typically 4 or 6 cylinder engines w/ not a whole lot of power (compared to a v8). A supercharger works off the crank, so if you start out with a small engine to begin with, using a supercharger would take more power away from an engine that doesn't have much to begin with (not factoring in the power that is then produced from the SC). A turbo works indepedently of the crank and utilizes the exhaust gases.
It is really a matter of efficiency between the two...
SC - quick start, slightly less top end
Turbo - slower start (turbo lag), higher top end power

Just compare cars... what do you usually see on most import cars? Turbos. What do you usually see on V8 muscle cars? SC's.

And actually I really do not know why you dont see more turbo'ed V8's since they are more efficient... anyone have an answer?

Sure, a supercharger leeches off of the crank, but so does an alternator and a power steering pump. A supercharger takes no more power away from a 4 cylinder than it does from an 8. One could assume that the larger rotating mass of the v8 crankshaft would cause more loss from spinning the supercharger than it would on the lighter inline 4 cylinders. Not sure if that is at all correct.

The reason smaller engines have turbochargers is that they fit well. Bigger engines are typically for acceleration racing, where turbo lag can't be tolerated.

Go to the power adder board for real life experience and insight. Also CamaroZ28.com has a supercharger/turbo board.

and alot of "Import cars" do have superchargers, however since they do have so much room and turbos are more efficient thats why u see them on "imports".. I know quite a few guys with civics etc. that have superchargers, they just don't have A\C

The reason you see more turbos on 4-poppers than v-8's is cause there are more factory designed turbo systems for 4-poppers.

Putting aside opinions on WHY turbos are used more than blowers, or less...........

Back to the questions:

It'll take the punishment for a long time IF......... you ensure an adequate fuel supply under boost (never EVER run lean) and take precautions to prevent detonation- like don't run too much spark advance. Also, the motor must be in good mechanical condition to begin with. If the rings are in bad shape or the bottom end's a little loose you'll kill it quick when you lay the boost to it. Don't go crazy with the boost. 6 PSI max, maybe a smidge more with intercooling.
