is this normal?

Okay, heres the deal. I just got done changing my oil on my new engine, 550 miles on it. The oil came out looking fine, but when I took off the filter, it didn't pour out the sides as I unscrewed it, like usually happens to me. It had oil in it still, which I poured out after I unscrewed it all the way. But everytime i have changed oil before I have gotten it all over me when removing the filter. I guess the car was cold when I changed it and that could have caused it, but it sorta worried me. It also took a little bit, like 5 seconds or so, to build oil pressure, is that normal too? I'm just sorta worried here and would like to know if I have an oil flow problem. Thanks.

I think you are talkin about the one I took off just now, as in the original filter. That one, no we didnt fill with oil, just oil around the gasket thing. Same with the one I put on just today. They were both fram filters.

1. If you use a Fram filter, then it's normal for there to be no oil spilling out the top of the filter because Fram filters are such pieces of crap. If you were using a better filter, it might have an anti-drainback valve in it. But that Fram garbage doesn't, so after the engine has been sitting for a while, all the oil that's in the passages in the motor drains back into the pan by running backwards through the filter, taking all the filtered-out debris back into the pan with it.

2. Don't use Fram filters. They're crap.

3. When you install a new oil filter, pour a quart of oil slowly into the center of it to fill it up before you put it on. That way the engine doesn't have to run without oil for however long it takes for the oil pump to fill the new filter up with oil, instead it has oil as soon as it starts up.

4. Use some other kind of filter besides Fram. AC/Delco (PF35 or PF1218) is a far superior product to Fram crap.

I've always used Fram and there has always been oil pour out the sides. I'm don't know whether that is anything to worry about though. And I just switched to AC Delco, I would have last time, but the store didn't have any.

Hmm okay, fram are deffinately crap. I for one am never buying another one again. That one I put on this morning failed within 5 miles of driving, that was fun. I got to change my oil again. Anyway, wasn't really the new filter's fault, mostly mine, but my part would have been circumvented by a quality filter. Anyway, the old filter's seal ripped off in the filter adapter, and from where I was when I was doing the first oil change I couldn't see. It came off hard, but I just figured my dad had put it in hard the last time. So when I put the new one in I wasnt surprised that it was hard to tighten. Little did I know that I now had a double seal. Stupid Fram, you've lost a customer. Anyway, my vent is over, you guys were right.
