Addons to a 305 LG4
I have a 305 4bbl. It is running 16.51 stock. Since I have added a K&N air filter, ram air, cut off cat. converter, lightened up the car somewhat.
I was wanting to know if I added a cam what size, what is a good cheap exhaust (cat back or duals), and do I want to use shorty or full size headers on a 85 camaro V8? (I have the 700R4 tranny with 2.73 or 3.08 gears)
I was thinking of this...
Cam Dur- Intake 262 Exhaust 272, .420 lift intake and 442 exhaust lift.
Dynomax shorty headers
Dynomax catback exhaust
GM high rise intake (stock GM off HO I think)
1" carb spacer
Power pullies
home ported and polished
K&N XTream air cleaner lid and cowl induction hood scoop.
Do you think I can get in the low 14's or high 13's on this? What about a good set of gears (both 1/4 mile tims and street drivable).
Thanks guys!!

Get yourself a Hooker cat-back. There are sound clips of it on the exhaust board in a post. Cost me $200 and had to get it welded on. I don't think you'll reach 13's without doing some head work. I'm not sure which cam to get, but it's a good start. Then get yourself some gears, if you want drivability and 1/4 go with 3:42s. Then get a TC to match your setup. With full exhaust, cam, gears, and TC, I would say 14's would be easy.
And if you haven't done so already do a full tune up.

See sig. I haven't had a chance to run it at the track yet, but it sure feels strong. My cam has .454/.480 lift, 272/284 (216/228 @ .050") duration. Summit lists it as the biggest Crane computer compatible cam with flat tappet lifters. A higher stalling torque converter is the only way to get that much cam moving, and will help even with the cam you suggested.
Porting stock heads will certainly help, but you should also go with 1.94" intake valves. The World 305's already have that size valves, and generally are a step up from ported stock - benefiting themselves from some diegrinder attention.
Not sure what you mean by "HO" intake, but if L69, it's the same as an LG4. If HO crate engine, that's a Vortec model and won't fit 305 heads. Mine came off a ZZ3 crate engine that the guy converted to TPI. I'm not sure how much, if any, the carb spacer will help you.
Make sure your exhaust is at least 2.5" downpipes and 3" y-pipe at the cat, 3" cat and catback. Anything smaller will likely choke it.
Stock with an open element air cleaner, I ran 16.85's at 5800' elevation (air density was more like 8500'). Without a doubt it is much, much stronger now. Desktop Dyno estimates peak HP at 360 @ 6000 RPM. Drag simulator has that in the low 15's/high 14's at this altitude (3.73's would give it almost 3 tenths). That should be 13's at lower altitudes. But, the proof is at the track, and that will have to wait until spring.
I have also noticed an enhanced capacity to pull gasoline out of the gas tank...
