engine ticking when cold
I bought a 92 rs, tuned it up, and still ticks a little when its cold, i think its the lifters but unsure, ya think maybe its just because it sat for 3yrs and is breaking in, or they are just junk, if i need to replace them what kind should i buy, i have no idea if its a mechanical or hydraulic cam so im kinda clueless at this point, looking for a inexpensive fix being as a i just put a new 700r4 w/B&M kit in it, im saving for a 350, so i can just junk that 305, but still need it to get around thx guys

more than likely they are hydrolic lifters or you could try some heavier oil. i myself have never had a problem like that in my third gen but i know all the 4 bangers ive driven tick pretty bad b4 warmed up. but if u do decide to replace the lifters you should replace the cam too because it isnt a good idea to just replace lifters and use old cam or new cam and old lifters will cause them to wear out faster. eaven a cheap summit cam and lifter set wouldnt be bad for what you would need they are like $80 at the most!

Another vote for the lifters going south...
Definately dont think about just replacing the lifters and not the cam, It will cause uneven wear on the new lifters and you will end up replacing the whole setup anyways.
Is that still an original engine? roller or flat tappet?
I have a brand new GM hydraulic flat tappet cam sitting here, $20 and pay shipping and its yours if you want.

Try adjusting the valves. The lash is probably a little too loose and they make noise when it's cold. Once everything warms up and expands a little bit, the lash is taken up and they quiet down. The lifters taking more time to pump up wouldn't have anything to do with temperature normally, especially since you said it goes away when its warm. Oil gets thinner as it warms up, which would make the problem worse as the oil gets hot.
