Vibrating/buzzing oil pump?

I put on the Y pipe today and started up my freshly built 327.
While I was underneith checking for leaks I heard buzzing I put my hand on the oil pan and it was vibrating the noise apperently is comming from the oil pump. I thought the Y might have been to close to the oil pan but nope. It actually sounds like an electric buzzbox fuel pump. It's a new HV pump and I expect some extra noise but Ive never heard anything soo loud ever. Oil pressure is great 80 cold 50 hot of course the engine has less then 3 hours run time. Think it will go away? Man this car isnt ever going to see life again

I don't ever recall hearing an oil pump make that sound. That's damned odd. I'd yank the oil filter, cut it open and look for metal. If it's making that much noise you would assume it's starting to chew itself to pieces.

Also, just a thing to try but...... simetimes if the distributor sits too far down into the engine the distributor gear bottoms out in the oil pump drive shaft slot. There's no room left for it to float up and down as the motor runs. Not sure if that would cause the noise you're describing but it definitely causes it's own set of problems. As a test, just use a double gasket between the distributor and intake manifold. If this somehow fixes the noise at least you know what the problem was.

Did the sound change with RPMs? Did it change cold vs. hot?

If you only heard it at idle and only at one temperature, then it could be a chattering relief valve - pressure right at the relief point, the valve opens & closes rapidly.

Or, it could be noisy gears in the pump, or what Damon said...

The whole situation just ticks me off. Ive never had a problem with any engine ever!

I dont know if the sound changed when the temp increased. When I heard the noise I just found the source then shut it down.

I pulled the filter and cut it open. Nothing too major as far as metal goes, slight traces suspended in the oil the same as you would see under typical break in of course Ive never cut a filter open this soon, usually 500 miles.

I guess to be safe I'm going to pull the pan and swap pumps, I really hate to do it too since is a pain, but I dont have much choice I guess. Sad thing is I had a SJ 327 that had 13K on a rebuild when pulled I could have just droped in. Why did I think it would be cool to build a 4 bolt 327. Of course I'd probably have replaced the oil pump in that engine too so I'd be in the same situation reguardless.

Sure its not from the pump in your transmission. Have you checked the fluid level since the swap. Could be the familiar Pump/Pressure Regulator Buzz on the 700r4/4L60 tranmssions.

I thought It was when I was under there since this trans has been sitting for 3 years. I checked fluid level a few days ago when I first fired the engine. Before I pulled the fliter off I ran it for a few seconds again just to make sure my ears wernt playing tricks. Its definately coming from the engine oil pan. I'll get it pulled down in a couple days.
