2.8 wont start

i recently did a valve job on my firebird and im having no luck starting the car, it cranks but thats about it, sometimes ill hear backfiring while its trying to start. but im pretty sure i did all of my timing right. i put the distributor in TDC on the compression stroke of the number one cylinder and checked my spark plug gaps and my wires. ive tried turning the distributor while somebody tries to start it and still nothing. could it be my fuel injector wires? maybe they got mixed up or something. i also notice gas sometimes is found on the top of the fuel rail after trying to start it for a little bit? any suggestions?

i'd find that gas leak first. I bet your distributor is 180 out possibly. Had the same issue after doing a tear down on my motor, come to find out it was just an oversight on my part. I wired the ignition wires in counter clockwise, like a mustang. I'd definitely find where that gas is coming from before you do anything else though. One good spark or backfire and it's bye bye birdy

I've the understanding that certain GM ECM's can be tricked into a "flooded" mode if you try cranking with the throttle wide open. In this mode, the ECM will command only a very small (or maybe none at all for a time) amount of fuel from the injectors. If you think you're flooding out, give it a shot.
