Running rough when cold.

I found topiccs about cars running rough when warm but mine is different and hopefully someone has a solution or suggestion to mine

It is getting cold now, around 38 F and when the car is first started up untill it warms up it runs rough. Usually its a rocket when cold and slower when warm/hot.

I cant think of anything other than something to do with the automatic choke?? maybe vaccum leak is more apparant when cold??

timing is set correctly since I had it in at a GM dealer in the summer and the distributor is not lose so it should still be lockt in position

If in drive and I brake to a stop the engine is running rought and revs jumping +-200 rpm If I drive at 1000rpm its okay but when i want to rev it to drive faster it hesitates.

I will do some more searches but in the mean time if you can help please do

Thanks,

Sam

The tach jumping sounds very familiar to me. And acting sluggish when you want to get on it, especially in the cold. I've had this problem on both of my cars.

First - Check out your spark plugs and wires. I've had to replace wires on both my cars. If you haven't replaced them for a while, its a good idea to replace them anyway. If that doesn't work then replace the cap and rotor. If that doesn't work replace the distributor, i guess? I dont know, but its always been bad spark plug wires or spark plugs for me causing this.

If you're running a carburetor, you may need to adjust your choke.

Thanks guys. I guess I should have mentioned its a 88 305 tpi.

The plug, plug wires, rotor and distributor are fairley new. The ignition and such are probably very very old.

I heard that if ignition coil goes bad then it goes and does not show any symptoms prior to failing... sounds odd cause i would think that as the coil starts to bur and wires in the coil touch the spark and all is gradually getting weaker... any one know about this?

Please help if you can

It happens from time to time. and when it does it runs fairly rough and cant rev it pass 2000 but then it is fine once i drive a short while. When i have problems i just let it go on about 1100 rpm and get to where i want...

I'd suspect fuel injectors or fuel pump.
